Much of my research work has occurred in inter-disciplinary and/or inter-cultural contacts. My doctoral thesis (1996) was on Melbourne band Not Drowning, Waving's sustained collaborations with musicians from Papua New Guinea. It involved a cross-cultural analysis of their project that drew on ethnomusicology, popular music studies and media studies and deployed these within historical and geo-political contexts. This set the tone for much of my subsequent work, whether it has been on Cornish techno music, the cultural history of southern Japanese islands or Sci-Fi and Horror film soundtracks. I draw on this background for my work with The Moviolas, an audio-visual ensemble I founded in 2014 with composer/producer Waldo Garrido (Macquarie University) and Grayson Cooke (Southern Cross University).
